The Importance of Timely Heater Repairs During Winter

When your heater starts acting up in the middle of winter, it's tempting to wait it out, especially if it's still putting out some heat. That's usually the wrong call.

A struggling heater rarely fixes itself. A strange smell, a clicking sound before it kicks on, or heat that feels weaker than it used to are all signs of a system working harder than it should. Left alone, a minor issue, a clogged filter, a worn igniter, a small refrigerant leak, often turns into a bigger and more expensive repair, or a full system failure on the coldest night of the year.

There's a safety angle too. Furnaces that aren't working properly can produce carbon monoxide, which is exactly why we recommend annual maintenance even when nothing seems wrong. A quick inspection catches small problems while they're still small.

A few signs it's time to call:

  • Uneven heating from room to room
  • Higher than normal energy bills
  • The system turning on and off more frequently than usual (short cycling)
  • Strange noises, banging, rattling, or squealing
  • A pilot light that's yellow instead of blue (gas systems)

If you're noticing any of these, it's worth having someone take a look before the next cold front rolls in, not after.
