How Often Should You Really Change Your Air Filter?

How Often Should You Really Change Your Air Filter?

The honest answer: every 3 to 6 months for most households, but it depends on your home more than the calendar.

A dirty filter doesn't just affect air quality, it makes your whole system work harder. Airflow gets restricted, your AC or furnace has to run longer to hit the same temperature, and that extra strain adds up, both on your energy bill and on the lifespan of the system itself.

A few things that mean you should change it more often, closer to the 3-month mark:

  • You have pets, especially ones that shed
  • Someone in the home has allergies or asthma
  • You live somewhere dustier or run the system constantly during peak season

If none of that applies and you're using a higher-quality pleated filter, you can usually stretch closer to 6 months. The simplest check: pull the filter out and hold it up to a light. If you can't see light coming through it clearly, it's time.

It's a five-minute task that makes a real difference in how hard your system has to work.
